What is Argireline?
Argireline is basically an alternative to Botox without the high price tag and the scary injections. It’s usually applied in cream form such as in lotions and gels. Lipotec–the European based company that makes the product–claims that it’s so effective that it will reduce the “depth of wrinkles an average of 17% after 15 days.” That’s pretty impressive if it actually will happen. Remember, there’s not a manufacture out there that will paint anything less then a rosy picture of its product. It’s just bad business. That’s why we’re here. Let’s dissect Argireline.
The Bad
Unlike Botox, where chemicals are injected directly into a target area, Argireline can be applied directly onto the skin–typically through a cream or gel. That means a wide area of your face will be exposed to the chemicals which could eventually lead to facial sagging. Yuck!
Because it’s relatively new, there’s no long-term study done on the effectiveness of the product. So it could either be a home-run or a complete waste of your money, we simply don’t know. There is no way anyone can make any definitive claims regarding the effectiveness of Argireline. Also keep in mind, those neurotransmitters Argireline manipulates are also responsible for helping the body fight fatigue, colds and other ailments. You’re could be tinkering with the organic make-up of the body.
I don’t want to scare you away from Argireline, that’s not my intention but I want to give an accurate account. The science behind the product is sound. Every time you smile, frown or basically move any type of facial muscles the skin can wear down, bunch up and wrinkle. Argireline claims it combats this problem by manipulating the neurotransmitters sent by the brain to contract these muscles. By prohibiting these muscles to contact and easing the tension on the facial skin, the likely hood of wrinkles decreases. It’s very similar to what Botox does.
There is a widely quoted article from the International Journal of Cosmetic Science that reports acetyl hexapeptide-3 (the scientific name for Argireline) was shown to reduce the depth of wrinkles up to 30% after 30 days. Take that for what it’s worth. Again, the science appears sound behind the product and from all accounts seems to work, but as with most wrinkle-fighting agents it comes with some baggage.
How much does Argireline cost?
Cheaper then Botox, but that’s not saying much. You won’t find this guy on the cheap, expect to pay market value for the various products that contain Argireline which usually means you’re closer to $100 then $20.
The way we see it
Good product with solid potential. Unfortunately, there’s not enough scientific research to back any of the chemical’s claims. Be aware in your search for products that contain Argireline that you can’t purchase it directly from the manufacture so the chance that it could react strangely with other product ingredients is possible. Also a third-party could manipulate the recommended amounts. Never purchase any product that lists a higher concentration then the recommended 10%.
